2019 Oscar Predictions

2019 Oscar Predictions

Well folks, it’s that time of year again! In under 24 hours time this years Oscars will have been handed out and we’ll all hopefully be able to laugh when we think of that time that Bohemian Rhapsody was considered to be one of the best films of the year by the Academy instead of wincing every time it’s mentioned. Or is that just me…?

As usual I’m here to give you my predictions for this years winners and as usual I’ve chosen the nominees I think should win and the ones I think will inevitably win. Since I didn’t get round to watching the short films this year it’ll just be 21 categories I’ll be predicting. So, without further adieu…

Best Picture

Should Win – The Favourite

Will Win – A Star Is Born

The biggest award of the night is probably the hardest one to predict this year. Any one of the nominees has a chance of taking it, even Bohemian Rhapsody. The Front Runners however feel like The Favourite, A Star Is Born and Green Book with Roma also a slight possibility but it doesn’t feel like the Academy is quite ready to embrace Netflix films that widely just yet…

Original Screenplay

Should Win – First Reformed

Will Win – Roma

This is probably Paul Schrader’s final chance at getting his first Oscar but it’s more likely that the Academy will throw Roma a bone in the form of the Original Screenplay award for snubbing it for Best Picture.

Adapted Screenplay

Should Win – Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Will Win – A Star Is Born

Actor in A Leading Role

Should Win – Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born

Will Win – Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody

Having practically swept awards season now, Rami Malek’s impersonation of Freddie Mercury is basically his already. It doesn’t really need to be announced and to be fair it’s understandable to a point. However if we’re going to give the award to an actor who sang his heart out and put his every being into the creation of his character, Cooper is surely the better man for it.

Actor in A Supporting Role

Should Win – Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Will Win – Mahershala Ali for Green Book

Frankly both Ali and Grant are perfect choices for the supporting actor award this year, but Richard E. Grant is much more deserving of it if not for the simply adorable way he’s been reacting to his sudden awards season acclaim. His first nomination in 40 years of acting, it would be one of the highlights of the night to see Grant round off awards season with the big one.

Actress In A Leading Role

Should Win – Olivia Colman for The Favourite

Will Win – Glenn Close for The Wife

While it would be great to see Colman win for The Favourite, I’d wager that Glenn Close has the home advantage here. Still, theres always the Emmy’s for Colman when she graces our screens once again as QEII in The Crown later this year…

Actress in A Supporting Role

Should Win – Rachel Weisz for The Favourite

Will Win – Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk

While I firmly believe that The Favourite should dominate the actress categories this year it still irks me that Emma Stone, who is undoubtedly the leading actress, has been slotted into supporting. With all that said though, Regina King will most likely steal it away for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk anyway.

Animated Feature Film

Should Win – Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Will Win – Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

The only question here is whether Lord and Miller will thank Kathleen Kennedy in their speech…

Makeup and Hairstyling

Original Score

Should Win – Mary Poppins Returns

Will Win – If Beale Street Could Talk

Original Song

Should Win – ‘The Place Where Lost Things Go’ from Mary Poppins Returns (though ‘The Cover Is Not The Book’ Should obviously be the one nominated…)

Will Win – ‘Shallow’ from A Star Is Born

Production Design

Should Win – Mary Poppins Returns

Will Win – Mary Poppins Returns

Sound Editing

Should Win – A Quiet Place

Will Win – Bohemian Rhapsody

Sound Mixing

Should Win – First Man

Will Win – Bohemian Rhapsody

Visual Effects

Should Win – Ready Player One

Will Win – Avengers: Infinity War

So, there we have it. Honestly this years Academy Awards feels like it’ll be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Perhaps it’s just me but the nominees this year, while mainly fine contenders don’t feel like they’ll be revisited much over the years as with previous years nominees. Here’s hoping I’m wrong though!

And while the Oscars may be hostless, my twitter account certainly won’t be, so feel free to follow me @movie_mad as I tweet along to the ceremony live and comment below what your predictions are!
